When we think of yoga, we often picture a serene studio, flexible bodies, and perfect poses.
But yoga is so much more than that. It’s a journey, and it can be a tool for self-discovery and a way to heal and grow, no matter where you’re starting from.
One of my students, Mary, recently shared her story with me, and it touched me deeply. I asked her to write a review on my webpage, but instead, she wrote a handwritten letter, which I loved. With her permission, I’m sharing some of it here because it encapsulates why yoga truly is for everyone.
Mary’s life changed dramatically when she lost her partner of over 30 years. Retirement soon followed, and stepping away from her stressful job as a chef gave her some relief, it also left her grappling with how to care for herself—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Taking that first step into a yoga class was a big leap for Mary. She worried about what to wear, whether she could keep up, and if she would be judged. But as she described it, she took a deep breath and walked through the door. That moment of courage was the start of something beautiful.
Yoga became a space for Mary to focus on herself, centre and ground her emotions, and embrace a new chapter in her life. She discovered that the only judgment she had to face was her own and learned to let go of it. Each class gave her a sense of achievement and reminded her that she could move forward, even after so much loss and change.
This story is a reminder that yoga doesn’t require us to be a certain age, size, or fitness level. It’s about showing up, exactly as we are. It’s about taking the time to breathe, move, and feel—not perfectly, but authentically.
If you’ve ever thought, “Yoga isn’t for me,” please let Mary’s story inspire you. Whether you’re grieving, starting anew, or simply curious, yoga can meet you where you are. It’s a space for everyone to explore, grow, and heal. And if you’re hesitating to try your first class, know this: you don’t have to be flexible, wear fancy clothes, or know all the poses. All you need is an open heart and the courage to take that first deep breath.
